Yesterday, someone asked me from their anguish, "Will it never end, will I always be like this?" Tears rolled down their face, pain contorted their body and my heart ached to see such suffering. It hurts to see others in pain. Everything I am wanted to reach out and hold this person, cradle and comfort them, but instead I said, "No, a part of you is like this and will be forever. This is the feeling of loss and sorrow. All humans feel this"……. I was just barely able to shut my mouth before I continued, "……and this is a good thing", which in that moment was a "good thing" I think.
All we humans come equipped with the standard range of emotions, and we can connect with one another through any of them. We can share empathically the feeling of delight, the feeling of grief, the feeling of even rage. All of them. When we are in the midst of overpowering emotional turmoil, we can step outside the story (doesn't matter if it is "true" or not), of what "caused" this state to arise in us in this particular moment, (cause and effect does exist), and realize that all humans (and perhaps non-humans) feel this also, and in that moment, compassion for our shared being-ness can arise.
So many "half truths" :)
It's just sorrow.
It's JUST sorrow.
This is sorrow.
This is SORROW.
This is MY sorrow.
Sorrow.
This.
….
I believe the person asking about all the pain they were feeling yesterday was asking many questions in the one.
"Will this moment I am right now be forever?"
The answer to which is "No"……
"Will this always be part of me?"
The answer to which is "Yes"……
"Can I do something to change this?
The answer to which is, "Yes and no"……..
"Can I get rid of this part of me?
"The answer to which is, "No, and someday you may find that you are glad you cannot".
